These exercises practise reading the scorecard. X means strike, / a spare and 0 no pins. Calculate regular bowling points before adding a Plus multiplier. These are original roll sequences; remaining frames can be completed with zeros where needed.
In this guide
Exercise 1: X · 7 / · 9 0
What regular total is settled after three frames? First identify the two rolls used by the strike, then the one spare bonus.
Position as text
Frame 1 strike: 20. Frame 2 spare: cumulative 39. Frame 3 nine and zero: cumulative 48.
Show hint
Here / represents three actual fallen pins.
Answer and explanation
20 + 19 + 9 = 48. The strike frame is 10+7+3, the spare frame 10+9, and the open frame 9+0. Cumulative entries are 20, 39 and 48.
Exercise 2: always 5 and 5
Each of the ten frames ends with 5 and 5; the final bonus roll also knocks down five. What is the result without multipliers?
Show hint
Each spare receives exactly one bonus roll.
Answer and explanation
150. Each frame scores 10+5=15. In frame ten the extra 5 completes that frame; it is not a new frame with bonuses of its own. Ten times 15 gives 150.
Exercise 3: the final strike
The first nine frames knock down no pins. Frame ten is X, then 7 and 3. How many rolls does it contain and how many points does it score?
Answer and explanation
Three rolls and 20 points: 10+7+3. After the 7, three pins remain for the last attempt. Although the two bonus rolls total ten, they do not generate another bonus chain.
Exercise 4: Plus without multiplying bonuses twice
Frame one is a strike from a factor-3 spot. Frame two knocks down 7 and 3, each at factor 1, followed by zero rolls. What does frame one score, and what is the complete Plus total?
Answer and explanation
Frame one receives 40: 10×3+7+3. Frame two receives 10+0=10, making 50 Plus points overall. Regular bowling scoring would be 30. Only the ten pins directly knocked down on the first roll generate the additional 20 points.
