Switch at the table: rule agreements and fair scoring

Announce action chains clearly, settle blocked play and compare round wins under a private table agreement.

The more actions a Switch table permits, the more valuable a shared rule card becomes. It prevents a promising play from being invalidated afterwards by an unknown exception. The following format is a suggestion for private play.

In this guide

Six items for the agreement

Record hand size, wild rank, penalties and responses, multi-card plays, drawing and final cards. Our study round specifies one card per turn and no seven flush. An expanded version may differ; identify its actual guide instead of saying “as usual”.

Announce the pending total

After a two is passed on, state the pending amount: two, four, six. For jacks, also distinguish an ongoing chain from one resolved by a red jack. This helps prevent a remembered suit change from being mistaken for a resolved penalty.

Agree on endings and blocked play

Our study session counts one point per round win. For a rare material deadlock, agree whether a full cycle with no play or draw awards the smallest hand a win or voids the round. This is an additional private ending rule. Waiting to choose until one’s own hand is visibly favoured would be unfair.

Collect rule questions as well as wins

Record a compact position: top card, active declared suit, pending penalty type and amount, hand and next player. That makes a dispute repeatable. The same recording method helps with Mau-Mau and Crazy Eights even though their action states differ.
